Так, видимо, проще, а то со ссылкой проблемы. Надеюсь модератор по башке не настучит.

JUDITH SEPHUMA

Growing gracefully from strength to strength since the release of her sparkling debut album A CRY, A SMILE, A DANCE, sensational South African vocalist JUDITH SEPHUMA has been winning over the hearts and ears of music lovers around the globe. Earlier this year, Judith delivered a sparkling performance as part of the Cricket World Cup opening extravaganza at the Newlands stadium in Cape Town (8 February 2003). An estimated global television audience of over one and a half billion viewers witnessed Judith Sephuma's rendition of the title track of her debut album "A CRY, A SMILE, A DANCE" which has now reached the Platinum sales mark (sales in excess of 50 000 units).

With a voice that joyously cries to the clouds, a dazzling smile that enchants her audiences and, with her music always inspiring a festive dance, the singer has truly announced herself as a major musical talent. But then a closer look at her remarkable story will reveal that she was always destined for superstardom. It's hard to believe that, until October 2001, JUDITH SEPHUMA was a reluctant record maker. The singer explains:

"People had been asking me when I was going to make an album for a long, long time, but I'd always been happy just performing live and singing with other people. If I was going to make an album for myself, I needed to be sure that the time was right and when we began recording, I knew that that time had come."

Thankfully for fans of music most sublime and enthralling, JUDITH SEPHUMA finally made the decision to enter the studio in September 2001 and commit her quite magnificent voice to record. The result was a debut album that has set the benchmark for female vocalists, not just in South Africa, but also on the continent and beyond. Produced by renowned artist/producer and fellow BMG Africa artist Selaelo Selota, the 11-track album offered up a platform for what is surely one of the most exciting vocal talents to have emerged out of this country for a very long time. More than just showcasing Judith Sephuma's lustrous voice, the record revealed an artist able to perfectly match this voice with a set of songs that are as diverse as they are compelling.

Growing up in Polokwane (formerly Pietersburg) in South Africa's Limpopo Province, Judith knew that she wanted to be a singer from an early age. After matriculating at Khagiso High School, she attended Johannesburg's legendary FUBA Academy music school in 1993, where she received her Grade 5 Music Diploma. One of her fellow students was an ambitious young guitarist who she knew from Polokwane, one Selaelo Selota, a man who would play a major role in her career. Other achievements included reaching the finals of the Shell Road to Fame contest in 1994, and the finals in SABC's Jam Alley Search For Talent that year. In 1994 she made a significant move to Cape Town to study music at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 1997 with a Performer's Diploma in Jazz. Judith then gained her Honours Degree in Jazz Performance, majoring in Jazz Singing, under the supervision of Prof. Mike Campbell, in 1999. While studying Jazz singing, she was also classically trained by Virginia Davids for five years.

During her years in the Cape, Judith's reputation as a vocalist blossomed, and she had the opportunity to work in bands like (fellow UCT music student) Selaelo Selota's Taola, Meropa, UCT's Big Band, The C-Base Collective and The Cape Symphonic Orchestra. She also performed with Jimmy Dludlu, Loading Zone and Ian Smith's Virtual Jazz Reality, as well as alongside musicians such as Jack van Poll and Gerry Spencer, and sang at many a cocktail party and private functions.

In 1996 JUDITH SEPHUMA was invited by Spencer to travel on the Symphony cruise ship for two months, visiting exotic places like Bazaruto, Mauritious, Zanzibar, Mombasa, and Reunion. Later the same year she performed, with the band Meropa, in Nantes, France at the Fin de Siecle Festival - her first overseas visit 1998/1999 with the assistance of pianist van Poll, Judith gained much experience performing in Europe, and among her gigs was being invited by the South African government to perform in Holland for the Mandela's Children Trust Fund.

Judith was invited by Jimmy Dludlu to perform at Thabo Mbeki's presidential inauguration in Pretoria, June 1999. In that year she also had the honour of meeting former president Nelson Mandela and sang a special song to him and his wife, Graca Machel, at the Cape Sun hotel. Another highlight of that year was singing at the Miss SA beauty pageant in Sun City. The young singer was certainly paying her music industry dues, developing skills like confidence, versatility, patience and professionalism, and all the while laying the secure foundations for her future success.

Having previously entered a number of music competitions, a pivotal moment came when Judith was awarded first prize for Best Jazz Vocalist at the Old Mutual Jazz Into The Future competition in June 1999. Selaelo was also a winner in the same competition that year, and both artists came to the attention of BMG Africa's A&R/Marketing Director (and 'Idols' judge!) Dave Thompson, who signed both artists to BMG's newly set up Giant Steps Afro jazz record label. At the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town in 2000, Judith formed her own backing band and performed under her own name to great acclaim.

By the time it came finally recording her debut album A CRY, A SMILE, A DANCE the easiest was choosing Selota as producer. "We have been working together for so many years, right from the beginning of my singing career. He understands me more than anyone really and I trusted him to do the right thing." As far as the overall musical vision for the album went, Sephuma says: "In the end, we settled on trying to remain as close as possible to reflecting just who I am - a sense of authenticity to the spirit of me. If a song felt funny or a strain, I wasn't prepared to sing it. I don't take chances with songs. I know from the first few chords whether it is right for me and this was the case with all the songs on the album."

Judith confesses that focusing on just what she wanted out of this recording was not the easiest task. "I have worked for so long, with so many different people, I was a bit confused in the beginning about what I wanted the album to sound like." She explains "People were pitching me songs all the time so I forgot about the album for about a year. But finally, I felt emotionally ready to do the album. I had a lot of decisions to make."

The album's title track speaks of the jazz style that Judith is trained in and is often frequently associated with, as do tracks like 'Are You Still There' and 'Can't Let Go'. What is instantly striking about the material Judith and Selaelo chose was its sheer breadth and scope - while boasting the jazz-inflected piano playing of Sylvester Mazinyani 'Iya Iyo', casts an intoxicating pan-African spell over its listeners, moving the singer into Angelique Kidjo-like terrain. The bewitching 'You Had Your Hand On Me' offers up a musical vision so distilled and gorgeous, it's no wonder this track gets another chance to imprint itself into the heart of the listener on the album's closer, 'You Had Your Hand (Reprise)'.

The singer's traditional music roots are also given a chance to shine on songs like the wondrous 'Le Tshephile Mang', the softly lilting 'Mmangwane' and the upbeat, hip-swaying number, 'Naka Di A Lela'.
SELAELO SELOTA penned most of the songs on the record - with the exception of contributions from bassist Musa Manzini and Marc Hendricks - both of whom Sephuma greatly admires and has very often worked with. The singer herself also had a hand in several of the album's songs. "One of the first songs Selaelo wrote for the album was 'You Had Your Hand On Me'. He wrote it in four minutes while I was out buying bread! We didn't have lyrics for the song, except for the first verse and when we got into the studio I just added the rest of the lyrics in."

With her album released and making serious waves in the booming Afro jazz market, Judith supported the legendary US singer Al Jarreau in concert in November 2001 and even collaborated with Jarreau on popular TV show 'Felicia'. After a phenomenal performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town in March 2002, Judith was invited to perform on the main stage at the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival, in The Hague in July, where over 12 000 music lovers welcomed Judith with open arms. In between these dates, Judith took home a stunning two South African Music Awards for Best Female Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album in April. She had arrived and was now on a roll, and she hasn't slowed down since.

Judith continued with her punishing live performance schedule backed by her trusted backing band, as word of her sensational skills and glorious music spread far and wide. Judith was rewarded for her efforts when she was awarded with a Gold disc for sales of 'A Cry, A Smile, A Dance' in excess of 25 000 units at the Joy Of Jazz Festival in August 2002, after an outstanding performance where she shared the stage with Richard Bona and Kirk Whalum. Judith was also one of four adjudicators for the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters competition 2002, and has delighted live audiences far and wide, from Senegal (the Saint Louis Jazz Festival in May) to Holland, NSJF in July. She received two Kora All Africa Music Awards, for Best Artist/Group from Southern Africa and Best African Female Artist in November and embarked on a series of performances in Japan during the same month.

Judith is still thrilling listeners with the diversity of material on her album and the way it reflects her abilities as a singer. "I have never committed myself to one style of singing. Even though I was working with a lot of musicians, I never lost my identity and I think this album truly reflects that. I might be a trained jazz singer but I am not just a jazz singer. I am a singer, plain and simple. I really don't want to categorise my music because it's beautiful music that just comes from the heart and people are going to enjoy it."

JUDITH SEPHUMA is taking success in her stride, her feet firmly on home soil, her music ablaze on the airwaves, and directing her golden voice to music lovers across the nation and abroad. Here is a young South African vocalist resonating the people's sentiments of sorrow, laughter and celebration in the only way she knows how, as she continues to sweep the music industry like a breath of fresh air and with more grace, honesty and perhaps most importantly - humility - than it has seen in a long time. Her album was at once the culmination of a long journey, and the beginning of another exciting chapter. As a mother of three, it's often been difficult for Judith to juggle a soaring career with motherhood, but true to form she has the last word on a humble, positive note: "It's been a really good year for me".
